Payout for brain-damaged worker
Payout for brain-damaged worker
A boatyard worker has been awarded a seven-figure damages payout after he suffered severe brain damage in a workplace accident.
A total of £7.2 million was awarded to Kevin Cleightonhills following an accident nearly five years ago at Bembridge Marine Ltd, on the Isle of Wight, where a metal gantry fell on to his head.
Mr Cleightonhills had been standing on the gantry when it collapsed beneath him. He landed on his feet after falling 15ft on to concrete but the falling metal then struck him on his head.
After residing in London for a few years he now lives in a bungalow near the family home in Bembridge, where he receives round-the-clock support. Although his solicitor says the 26-year-old is making excellent progress and helps out in a local charity shop, he will never be able to live independently.
Approving the agreed award as being in Mr Cleightonhills' best interests, the judge paid tribute to his family for their "fortitude, hard work and integrity".
