Pay-out for cancer diagnosis delay
Pay-out for cancer diagnosis delay
A child who lost his right eye has been awarded a five-figure damages payout. A ‘basic administration error’ led to Harvey Dellar’s cancer not being diagnosed in time to save his sight. Harvey’s parents noticed his right eye was turning inwards when he was 12 months old and took him to an opticians, who referred him to Northampton General Hospital. However the boy, now three, was not offered an appointment at the hospital until it was too late to save his sight as the cancer had spread so far that surgeons had no choice but to remove his eye. After the payout, which will be put in a trust to meet Harvey’s future needs, was approved by a judge at Birmingham Crown Court, Harvey’s mother Caroline Haywood said she believed her son may not have lost his eye if he had been diagnosed sooner.
