Misdiagnosis of Thyroid Condition Results in £3.9 Million Compensation Payout
The relatives of Amos Mason, a 25-year-old wheelchair-bound man have been paid £3.9 million in compensation, following a 14-year legal battle.
Mr Mason was left severely physically and mentally disabled after doctors repeatedly missed a thyroid condition for years, despite regular visits to Preston’s Sharoe Green Hospital.
Failure to diagnose thyroid condition led to tragic collapse
Mr Mason developed the thyroid condition shortly after his birth in 1989, however despite numerous visits to the hospital, the condition went undiagnosed as sufficient tests were not carried out by staff.
The failure to diagnose the condition led to his health deteriorating throughout his childhood before he eventually collapsed in 2001, aged 11. The collapse led to Mr Mason suffering from devastating permanent brain injuries.
Faced with the hefty costs of round-the-clock care for Amos, his parents, Ruth and Glen, lodged a compensation claim against the Preston Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
Compensation for hospital negligence will allow specialist care
The compensation will be paid in a £2.1 million lump sum followed by annual payments of £100,000 for the rest of his life. The payout will allow the family to buy a home that can be adapted to suit Mr Mason’s specialist medical needs. While the annual payments will allow the family to hire specialist workers to provide care for Mr Mason.
The High Court judge, who approved the compensation claim, praised the courage and resilience of Amos’ parents Ruth and Glen.
Speaking after the case, Amos’ mother Ruth commented: “We have a great team of people around us and they’ve kept us going through all of this. Hopefully now we can have a more normal life. At first it seemed like a dream, like it was never going to happen, but then when we knew it was coming it seemed to take forever. It’s taken a lot of hardwork, but it’s all been for Amos, and he’s a happy boy.”
How to make a compensation claim for misdiagnosis or negligence by a hospital or medical practitioner
You are entitled to expect a certain standard of treatment from those providing medical assistance to you. If this treatment falls below standard you may be entitled to recover the cost of the private medical treatment needed to correct the failings on the part of those originally treating you. Our goal at IBB Solicitors is to obtain justice for victims of the negligence by others, by securing compensation that reflects their pain and suffering, as well as related financial losses including loss of earnings, treatment costs and specialist care costs.
