Measures To Strengthen Competition Regime
Competition Minister Jo Swinson has unveiled new measures aimed at strengthening and streamlining Britain’s new competition regime. The plans were outlined in a consultation, Competition Regime: Draft Secondary Legislation – Part 2.
Moves To Simplify Civil And Criminal Procedures
The Competition Appeal Tribunal, the High Court and Court of Session will be able to grant a warrant to enter premises, which will help simplify civil and criminal procedures for managing antitrust and cartel cases. The Competition and Markets Authority will control the use of competition powers between economic regulators, while the proposals also include the ability to publish pertinent information about arrangements between businesses to ensure they do not fall within the criminal cartel offence. “It is vital for the UK’s competition regime to be both strong and streamlined, protecting consumers and businesses alike from unfair practices,” Ms Swinson said. “These measures are part of wide-reaching reforms to improve the UK competition regime, making sure the new Competition and Markets Authority has the tools in place to operate efficiently and effectively from day one.”
