Lord Hodgson appointed to review the Lobbying Act 2014
The government has appointed Lord Hodgson as official reviewer of the Lobbying Act and he has stated he is aiming to publish the report by the end of 2015. Lord Hodgson, who also conducted the fiver-year review into the Charities Act 2006, will assess the ‘effectiveness of the current provisions of third party campaigning’.
The Lobbying Act has been widely criticised in the charities sector as an unnecessary and restrictive piece of legislation. Recent research claims that the Act’s biggest impact is a drain on charity resources due to increased legal advice being taken and red tape being introduced, and over 160 charities have signed a letter calling for it to be repealed.
