The impact of motoring convictions on car insurance
The consequences of a motoring conviction has been put into stark perspective following recent research based on almost five million insurance quotes issued from October to December last year through the confused.com website.
As an example, contravening a red light could yield a 24% rise in one’s insurance premium. Speeding which accounts for almost two thirds of offences, increases premiums by more than a third.
The research by the insurer intermediary was based on almost five million insurance quotes issued from October to December last year. A fifth of the customers – 924,000 – had a driving conviction. Nearly half of the convictions (49 per cent) were related to speeding, followed by using a hand-held phone at the wheel (9.82 per cent) and running a red light (7.48 per cent). Caroline Dunne, Consultant in IBB’s Road Traffic Offences team comments:
“Whilst a motoring conviction brings its own difficulties before and during court proceedings, it may also have a financial impact during this economic recession. What is certain though is that any motoring conviction must be disclosed.”
