Cyber Security Essentials Scheme

What is the Cyber Security Essentials Scheme?

Cyber Security Essentials is a Government-backed, industry supported scheme to help organisations protect themselves against common cyber attacks.

The full scheme was launched on June 5 2014 and awards organisaions one of two new Cyber Essential Badges if specific requirements and technical controls have been met. It is backed by industry, including the Federation of Small Businesses, the CBI and a number of insurance organisations which are offering incentives for businesses.

Since IBB's last audit, the firm has been working toward the standard and making the required changes

More details on the scheme are available here https://www.cyberaware.gov.uk/cyberessentials/

Why is the Cyber Security Essentials Standard Important?

The standard is important for a number of reasons:

  • By following the recommendations it will help protect IBB against common cyber threats
  • Demonstrates to clients that IBB takes cyber security seriously
  • Enables IBB to bid for Government contracts. (Since October 2014 Cyber Essentials has been mandatory for suppliers of Government contracts which involve handling personal information and providing some IT products and services)

The Cyber Essentials Certificate provides independent assurance that protections are correctly in place. The certificate allows IBB Solicitors to display the Cyber Essentials badge to demonstrate to customers, partners and clients that it takes cyber security seriously.

What Industry has to say about Cyber Essentials

“The Information Commissioner’s Office supports the Cyber Essentials scheme and encourages businesses to be assessed against it. Protecting personal data depends on good cyber security, and the threats and challenges are getting ever more sophisticated. All too often organisations fail at the basics. This scheme focuses on the core set of actions that businesses should be taking to protect themselves, their customers, and their brand. Cyber Essentials enables businesses to demonstrate that they are taking action to control the risks”- Christopher Graham, Information Commissioner, Information Commissioner’s Office

“Increasing awareness of the cyber security threat to business is an important issue to the CBI, so we are pleased to be one of the first organisations to take part in the Cyber Essentials scheme. Business leaders will benefit from the access to helpful and authoritative cyber security guidance. Encouraging firms to adopt this scheme is a positive step towards greater awareness of cyber security and more widespread action to manage the risks”

– John Cridland, Director General, Confederation of British Industry
