HS2 protesters warn of legal action
A formal letter has now been sent to Government from a group opposing the HS2 high-speed rail plan, which will see a new line built between London and Birmingham. The HS2 Action Alliance (HS2AA) has written to transport secretary Justine Greening, who last month gave the green light to the £33 billion project, and have also been in talks with the European Commission. The group says in its letter that it is considering seeking a judicial review as it has concerns over the environmental impact the line will have and recommends the plans are scrapped.
In the letter HS2AA said the grounds for its challenge were “the failure of the Department for Transport (DfT) to comply with the legally binding requirements of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Regulations 2004 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010”. The letter also blasted the Government for not completing a “full strategic environmental assessment” and “an assessment of all alternatives” before the proposals were put forward for public consultation.
