Hammersmith Set for £150m Redevelopment
Hammersmith Set for £150m Redevelopment
Revised plans for a £150 million development in Hammersmith have been given the green light by councillors and residents groups that had opposed the previous scheme. The latest bid to redevelop the area around Hammersmith Town Hall has been described as a breath of fresh air by the Save Our Skyline and Hammersmith Society residents groups, getwestlondon reported. Hammersmith and Fulham Council’s planning committee gave the go-ahead to the design of architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands on Tuesday. The council will get replacement offices as a part of the scheme, which will also feature commercial property including retail outlets, space for restaurants and cafes, a new town square, Curzon cinema, an open space and 196 new homes.
Residents had complained that the original proposal would have meant the loss of affordable homes, but the new plans include 54 refurbishments of Pocklington Trust properties. The buildings will not now be any higher than the current town hall. Save Our Skyline chairman John Jones said the new scheme was a “vast improvement” and he hopes it will build the value of local properties, although he thinks many of them will be snapped up by overseas buyers. The leader of the council, Nicholas Botteril, said it had listened to the views of residents and Hammersmith now has a scheme it can be proud of as a result.
