Government bows to sector pressure and “pauses” the Lobbying Bill for a six-week re-think
In early November the government agreed to pause the second part of the Lobbying Bill for six weeks to provide Ministers with the opportunity to reconsider their plans to regulate how charities campaign, particularly in the run up to elections. The proposals, over which the sector had not been previously consulted, have drawn strong criticism from across the spectrum of charities. Members of the House of Lords had threatened to send the Bill to a Select Committee, with a delay of three months, if the government did not agree to pause the Bill for re-consideration before it was sent to the Lords.
