Dyson eyes employment law changes

Business tycoon Sir James Dyson has said that the UK will thrive in manufacturing if looser employment laws and shorter factory leases are introduced. The costs of taking on new staff and the long-term nature of property leases hold many firms back, Sir James said. He added: “Nobody wants the expenditure of a lease on a factory which lasts 21 years. You can’t plan 21 years ahead.” Sir James also said that his Dyson company has developed a new digital motor and, as a result, is hoping to be able to start providing components for electric cars and batteries. A robot vacuum cleaner is another concept which the firm has been working on, although Sir James admitted that it is “very hard to do” due to the problems of navigating it around a room. Dyson recently announced that it was expanding its 3,600-strong worldwide workforce by taking on another 300 staff members, of whom 200 will be in engineering positions.
