The Government has published plans designed to get more disabled people into employment. Its proposals include ideas on what both individuals and employers can do to enable more people with disabilities or health conditions to develop a long-term career. A large number of disabled people and those with health conditions are already in work and such employment rates have steadily increased over the years, but they are still considerably lower than for non-disabled people. One proposal concerns the launch of a ‘One Stop Shop’ and a revamped Disability Symbol to support employers in recruiting staff. Another suggestion focuses on easing the transition between education and the workforce by providing knowledge packs and promoting successful role models. The Government also raised the possibility of a “new gateway” into employment services, meaning that disabled people or those with health conditions are able to access the right support to help them find work. “Being disability-confident means recruiting, promoting and retaining a diverse and talented workforce. If employers are not disability-confident, they risk overlooking a wealth of talent,” said Mike Penning, Minister of State for Disabled People.
