Bosses ‘confused’ by employment law
Bosses do not properly understand their rights and responsibilities on employment legislation, according to a new Government-commissioned report. They are particularly confused about employment tribunals, it suggests. The claims come as the Government is reviewing employment law in the hope of making it clearer for businesses. The Government said it is also making changes to ensure tribunals are simpler, cheaper and quicker to use. Employers who thought employment legislation was burdensome were said to lack understanding of the law, according to the report. In fact, Employment Relations Minister Jo Swinson said the UK has one of the world’s most lightly regulated and elastic employment systems. Dismissal processes were seen as stressful and expensive, with some employers unnecessarily going beyond legal requirements. Ms Swinson said the research shows that the Government has to work with employers to help them better understand their rights and responsibilities, leaving them free to concentrate on expanding their business. The Government, she said, is addressing business and employee concerns about the dismissal process through more settlement agreements. It is working closely with Acas to get the rules and procedures for early conciliation right. She added: “Central to our efforts is the promotion of the benefits of good communication, better management and the early resolution of workplace problems as this can lead to the best outcomes for everyone.” Our Employment team provides advice on the employment aspects of all major business decisions.
